What makes La Te Da special
The building was built in 1892 by cigar manufacturer Teodoro Perez. It was originally called La Terraza de Martí, because José Martí gave speeches for Cuban independence from its balcony.
Today La Te Da combines an adults-only boutique hotel, a restaurant, bars and the Crystal Room. There, Randy Roberts sings live in his drag cabaret at 9 pm, without lip-syncing. Other well-known cabaret and comedy artists also perform. On Sunday afternoons DJs play by the pool for the tea dance, which is busiest around 5:30 pm.
Atmosphere and crowd
More elegant than the bars further down Duval Street: mostly gay men and couples, mostly 40+, plus women and all kinds of holidaymakers. For the Crystal Room you can dress up a little more than shorts and flip-flops.
A good fit if you …
- want to see drag with live singing instead of lip-syncing
- want to go to the tea dance by the pool on Sunday
- want a good meal followed by a show
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a party bar open until 4 am
- are in your early 20s and looking for a club crowd
