What makes Mash Central stand out
Mash Central sits right on Allenby, the long nightlife street in the city centre. After Layla Bar closed at the end of 2024, it was the city’s only remaining gay bar. On 16 June 2025 it was destroyed in an Iranian missile attack. After around four and a half months of rebuilding, it reopened on 30 October 2025 with new lighting, a new sound system and a bigger stage.
The bar focuses on drag shows, comedy (often in English) and karaoke. The owner works with individual groups within the community, such as bears and the BDSM scene, and hosts dedicated nights with them. For many in the scene, the reopening is a sign that nightlife goes on.
Atmosphere and crowd
Mash Central is more of a relaxed pub than a chic cocktail bar. During the week it is rarely packed, so it’s easy to strike up a conversation, even on your own. Guests praise the friendly vibe, the music and the drinks.
A good fit if you …
- are looking for a real gay bar with history
- like drag, karaoke or comedy
- are out on your own and want to meet people
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a club with a big dance floor
- are looking for a quiet lounge to talk
