Bulgaria is an attractive, affordable destination with a queer scene concentrated almost entirely in Sofia. Sofia Pride has been growing for years, but the political climate has become harsher.
Legal situation: Homosexuality is legal, and the anti-discrimination law protects against disadvantage based on sexual orientation. The constitution defines marriage as a union of a man and a woman, and there is no partnership for same-sex couples – despite a 2023 ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. Since August 2024 a law has banned “LGBT propaganda” in schools.
