Puerto Vallarta is Mexico’s queer sunshine capital – with its own gay beach, an entire nightlife strip and bars on every corner of the Zona Romántica. In winter the little Pacific town becomes a meeting place for gay travellers from all over North America and beyond.

Zona Romántica & Playa Los Muertos

During the day everything revolves around the gay section of Playa Los Muertos with the Blue Chairs and the pool beach club Mantamar. In the evening you head a few blocks on into the Zona Romántica, where La Noche with its roof terrace kicks things off and Lázaro Cárdenas turns into a party strip. There, Industry and CC Slaughters face each other directly, while Paco’s Ranch flies the flag for the old guard with drag spectaculars. Bears find their territory at the STUDS Bear Bar.

When to go?

  • May – Vallarta Pride: A week of parades, pool parties and galas; in 2026 it took place from 17 to 24 May, with a parade along the Malecón (check the 2027 dates with the organiser).
  • January/February – Beef Dip Bear Week: The bear community takes over the beach, bars and clubs (check dates with the organiser).

Practical tips

  • High season runs from November to April – that’s when the bars and beach are busiest, so book hotels in the Zona Romántica early.
  • Almost everything in the Zona Romántica is within walking distance; for late journeys home to Amapas or Conchas Chinas, it’s better to take a taxi or ride-hailing service.
  • Playa Los Muertos is not a nudist beach – if you want to swim without clothes, look for a clothing-optional hotel.
