Lyon is France’s capital of good food. Bouchons, an Old Town and two rivers – and a scene concentrated on the Presqu’île between the Rhône and the Saône.

Most of the bars are around the town hall and the opera house in the 1st arrondissement. L’Étoile Opéra is a cocktail bar with shows, Le L Bar a casual bar for the start of the evening, and at It Bar people dance until late.

When to go?

• June – Marche des Fiertés: Pride march through the city centre.
• Early December – Fête des Lumières: festival of lights during which the whole city glows.

• The bars are on the slope of the Croix-Rousse and around Place des Terreaux – pack comfortable shoes.
• People eat late in the evening; the bars fill up from around 10 pm.
