Washington, D.C.

The capital of the USA has one of the most diverse queer bar scenes in the country. Between Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, U Street and Adams Morgan, show tune bars, sports bars, lesbian bars and dance clubs are often only a few minutes’ walk apart.

From Dupont to Adams Morgan

The historic heart of the scene beats around Dupont Circle: here people have been singing along to musical hits at JR.’s Bar since 1986. Along 14th and U Street are the younger venues – Trade with its XL drinks, the multi-storey Kiki and the dance bar Crush Dance Bar. In Adams Morgan, Pitchers & A League of Her Own share a building and bring gay men and lesbians together, while the Green Lantern in a side alley preserves the charm of the classic men’s bar. The main nights out are Thursday to Saturday; most bars close at 2 am on weekdays and 3 am at the weekend.

When to go?

  • June – Capital Pride: a parade, street festival and countless parties turn the city into a sea of rainbows; the bars are then full until the morning (check the date with the organisers).
  • October – 17th Street High Heel Race: on the Tuesday before Halloween, drag queens and people in costume race along 17th Street in Dupont Circle in high heels – thousands of spectators join in, and afterwards the surrounding bars are packed.

Our favourites

  • JR.’s Bar – at the Monday show tune sing-along you experience D.C. at its warmest.
  • Pitchers & A League of Her Own – a gay and a lesbian bar side by side; you rarely find such a mixed crowd.

Practical tips

  • In D.C. you may only drink alcohol from the age of 21; ID is checked at almost every door, so bring your passport.
  • The scene neighbourhoods are close together and easy to reach by Metro (Dupont Circle and U Street stations) – a bar tour on foot is easy.
  • Many bars offer happy hour until 7 or 8 pm; if you start early, you save a lot in an otherwise expensive city.
