Mexico City has developed into Latin America’s most vibrant queer metropolis. Between the party streets of the Zona Rosa, the salones of the Centro Histórico and the hip neighbourhoods of Roma and Condesa, there’s a party here every night.
Zona Rosa & Centro
The epicentre is the Zona Rosa around Calles Amberes, Florencia and Londres: at Kinky Bar people dance on three floors overlooking the Reforma, El Taller has been living out its drag legend in the basement since 1986, and at Vaqueros banda and ranchera ring out. Bears meet for karaoke on Fridays at Nicho Bears & Bar, while leather guys head a few streets south to Tom’s Leather Bar. The Centro Histórico is completely different: on Calle República de Cuba, Marrakech Salón throws one of the city’s most iconic parties with 80s pop and drag. During the day, a visit to one of the traditional steam baths such as Baños Finisterre is worthwhile.
When to go?
- June – Marcha del Orgullo LGBT+: At the end of June hundreds of thousands march from the Ángel de la Independencia along the Paseo de la Reforma to the Zócalo – one of the largest Pride marches in Latin America (check dates with the organiser).
- October/November – Día de Muertos: Around 1 and 2 November the city turns into a sea of marigolds and costumes, and the bars of the Zona Rosa join in the exuberant celebrations too.
Our favourites
- Marrakech Salón – camp, kitsch and the sweatiest dance floor in town.
- Kinky Bar – party nights with a terrace view of the Reforma.
Queer city tours

Practical tips
- Getting around safely: At night, take an Uber or DiDi rather than hailing a taxi on the street, and keep valuables close to your body in packed clubs.
- Carry cash: Many bars and baths, for example in the Centro, only accept pesos in cash.
- Altitude: The city lies at around 2,240 metres – go a little easier on the mezcal and tequila on your first evening.
