With the repeal of Section 377A, Singapore has opened a new chapter – and its queer scene is more self-confident than ever. Around Neil Road in Tanjong Pagar and in Chinatown the bars are close together, perfect for a tour on foot.
Tanjong Pagar & Chinatown
The centre of the scene is Neil Road with its historic shophouses. There, Tantric Bar with its palm-filled courtyard and the neighbouring Backstage Bar have been the heart of the nightlife for years, while EPI (Bar Upstairs) serves more laid-back cocktails. In Chinatown, Dorothy’s Bar awaits with a balcony and an Oz theme, and bears find their home at Lluvia on Telok Ayer Street. Big club nights are mainly organised by party promoters such as HYPER at changing venues.
When to go?
- June – Pink Dot: The country’s largest LGBTQ+ gathering turns Hong Lim Park pink; in 2026 the 18th edition took place on 27 June.
- Monthly – HYPER parties: The promoter Hypertainment hosts pool, rooftop and circuit parties at changing venues (check dates with the organiser).
Our favourites
- Tantric Bar – the Neil Road classic with a palm-filled courtyard
- Dorothy’s Bar – drinks with a balcony view over Chinatown
Queer city tours
Want to get to know the scene during the day too? A tour with local guides is a great way to do it:
- LGBTQ history walking tour – the city’s queer history

Practical tips
- Despite decriminalisation, society is rather conservative – it’s best to be restrained with displays of affection in public.
- Singapore has extremely strict drug laws with very severe penalties, up to the death penalty for trafficking – stay away from substances of any kind.
- Alcohol is expensive: happy hours at Tantric, Backstage & co. are well worth it.
