Toronto celebrates one of the world’s largest Prides – and around Church and Wellesley the heart of the scene beats all year round. The Village is compact and lively, while younger queer bars are increasingly settling in the west and east of the city.
Church-Wellesley Village
Within a few hundred metres of Church Street lie the classics: Woody’s & Sailor as a starting point, Crews & Tangos for drag every night, Black Eagle for the leather scene and Pegasus on Church for pool and bingo. If you prefer somewhere younger and less traditional, head to Queen West for Sweaty Betty’s. In summer patios shape the streetscape; they generally close from November to April. The Glad Day bookshop, an institution since 1970, left its premises on Church Street in 2025.
When to go?
- June – Pride Toronto: Street fair, Trans March, Dyke March and the big parade on the last Sunday in June; in 2026 the parade took place on 28 June.
- October – Halloween on Church: Costumed crowds pour through the Village (check dates with the organiser).
Our favourites
- Crews & Tangos – drag every night on Toronto’s most famous stage
- Woody’s – the classic where every night begins
