Budapest is a city of thermal baths, bridges and ruin bars. The queer scene is small but warm-hearted – and it has shown great resilience in recent years.
The scene
The main meeting points are bars such as Why Not on the Danube promenade, a café by day and karaoke bar by night, and Habrolo in the Jewish Quarter with karaoke and live music. A lot of gay life also happens at parties held at varying venues.
Legal situation and safety
In recent years Hungary has passed several anti-LGBTQ laws, including a ban on Pride events in 2025. Since the change of government in April 2026, these laws have not yet been repealed. There is no particular danger for travellers, but a degree of caution is sensible.
When to go?
- Late June – Budapest Pride: In 2025 up to 200,000 people marched despite a legal ban. For 2026 the police announced that they would not ban the parade on 27 June.
- All year round: Thermal baths and ruin bars make Budapest appealing in every season.
Our favourites
- For an evening on the Danube: Why Not Café & Bar.
- For karaoke: Habrolo.

Practical tips
- Be somewhat reserved with public displays of affection – outside the scene venues, acceptance is lower than in Western Europe.
- The thermal baths are a must, but they aren’t gay venues.
- Hungary uses the forint, and cards aren’t accepted everywhere.
