Cape Town is Africa’s rainbow metropolis – with Table Mountain, Atlantic beaches and a scene that has been making history for decades. In February the city celebrates its Pride, in summer Clifton Beach fills up, and in 2028 it will even host WorldPride.
De Waterkant and Observatory
The colourful De Waterkant neighbourhood with its pastel-coloured houses at the foot of Signal Hill is the traditional gay village. Here you’ll find Café Manhattan, Africa’s oldest queer bar, and just a few streets away people dance until four in the morning at weekends at The Pink Candy Nightclub – both made Time Out’s 2026 list of the world’s best queer nightlife spots. The Zer021 Social Club in Zonnebloem, with drag and karaoke, is more mixed and more local in character. In Observatory, the queer women’s scene meets at the Duchess Lounge, and the Shaft Cruise Zone is close by. During the day, head to Clifton 3rd Beach, and the Triangle Project is the community’s most important point of contact.
When to go?
- February – Cape Town Pride: In 2026 the Pride festival ran from 5 February to 1 March; the parade set off on 28 February from Alfred Street in De Waterkant, followed by the Mardi Gras. If you come at the end of February, you’ll experience the city at the height of summer and in a party mood.
- December – MCQP (Mother City Queer Project): The legendary costume party with a different theme every year celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024 and is the highlight of the Cape Town summer (check dates with the organiser).
Our favourites
- Café Manhattan – the city’s queer living room since 1994
- Clifton 3rd Beach – the Atlantic, granite boulders and half the scene
- Zer021 Social Club – drag, karaoke and warm-hearted locals

Practical tips
- Cape Town has a high crime rate. After dark, don’t walk from bar to bar – always use Uber or Bolt, even for short distances. Don’t display your phone and valuables openly, not even in clubs.
- Be careful with dating-app meet-ups: arrange to meet in public places first and don’t take anyone home whom you don’t know.
- The best time to travel for the beach and Pride is December to March. In the South African winter (June–August) it’s cool and rainy, and the nightlife is quieter.
