Ljubljana

Ljubljana is one of the most relaxed capitals in Europe – and since the introduction of same-sex marriage also one of the most open in the East. The scene is small but closely interwoven with alternative culture.

Metelkova and the Old Town

At night there is no getting around Metelkova: in the former barracks complex, the gay club Klub Tiffany and the lesbian-feminist Klub Monokel are next door to each other. To start the evening, Pritličje on Town Hall Square is a good choice, with regular queer nights. Once a month the K4 Roza party at Klub K4 turns into a big electronic bash, and for relaxation there is Gymnasivm Sauna. Most events take place on Fridays – during the week it is quiet.

When to go?

• June – Ljubljana Pride: a festival with a cultural and discussion programme that ends with the parade through the Old Town (check the date with the organisers).
• Monthly – K4 Roza: queer electronic night at Klub K4, according to Visit Ljubljana on the last Saturday of the month.

Practical tips

• Metelkova is an autonomous cultural centre with a rather rough feel – that is part of its charm, but at night you should keep an eye on your belongings.
• The Old Town is small and walkable: from Pritličje to Metelkova it is around 15 minutes on foot.
• Many events are announced at short notice on Facebook and Instagram – it is worth checking beforehand.
