Delhi is the political heart of queer India – and has been celebrating its freedom ever more loudly since 2018. The scene thrives on club nights, speakeasies and alternative cafés spread across the vast city.

The scene

At the centre is Kitty Su Delhi in The LaLiT hotel at Connaught Place, which hosts weekly LGBTQ nights, drag brunches and karaoke. For quieter evenings there’s the speakeasy PCO Bar in Vasant Vihar, Depot48 in Greater Kailash and the Summer House Cafe in Hauz Khas, all of which regularly host queer events. The Naz Foundation stands for the long legal battle against Section 377. Many other parties are run by collectives that announce dates on Instagram.

When to go?

  • November – Delhi Queer Pride: India’s best-known Pride parade has taken place every November since 2008, traditionally from Tolstoy Marg to Jantar Mantar (check dates with the organiser).
  • June – Pride Month: Bars and clubs celebrate with brunches, mixers and parties.

  • Homosexuality is legal, but society is conservative – outside clubs and scene venues discretion is advisable, and it’s best to avoid displays of affection in public.
