Memphis on the Mississippi is the city of blues, soul and barbecue. The queer scene is small and local in character, with only a few full-time gay bars and an active community centre.
The scene
The bars are in Midtown: Dru’s Place on Madison Avenue focuses on karaoke and drag, while The Pumping Station on Poplar Avenue is the meeting point for bears and leather. In the Cooper-Young neighbourhood is OUTMemphis, the centre for advice, testing and groups.
When to go
- October: LGBTQ+ History Month with a programme at OUTMemphis and Halloween parties in the bars
- Monthly: Leather & Gear Night (3rd Saturday) and Underwear Night (4th Saturday) at The Pumping Station
