Auckland

Auckland’s queer scene is small but warm – and it takes place almost entirely on one street: Karangahape Road. “K Road” has been the colourful, creative heart of the city for decades.

Karangahape Road

Within a few hundred metres you will find the Eagle Bar with its legendary jukebox, the party venue Family Bar & Club and, opposite, the basement club G.A.Y with the playful Pink Pony bar. At the top end of K Road, Caluzzi Cabaret has been serving dinner with a drag show for 30 years. During the week it is quiet; at weekends the street becomes a party strip. In addition, there are changing party series at various venues, which are best followed on Instagram.

When to go?

  • February – Auckland Pride: The festival, with Big Gay Out in Coyle Park and the Rainbow Parade on Ponsonby Road, takes place every year in February (check the date with the organisers).
  • February – Bear NZ Week: The bear gathering, with parties on K Road including at the Eagle Bar, ran from 4 to 8 February 2026 (check the 2027 date with the organisers).

Our favourites

  • Caluzzi Cabaret – an evening you will not forget
  • The Eagle Bar – the jukebox is yours
