Ukraine is at war, and the German Foreign Office warns against travel to the entire country. At the same time the queer community is more visible and socially accepted than ever before, not least thanks to many LGBTQ+ soldiers at the front.
Legal situation: Homosexuality has been legal since 1991. Employment law protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation. There is no marriage or registered partnership. A partnership bill is stuck in parliament, and a new civil code is criticised by the community as a step backwards. According to the Supreme Court (2026), courts can recognise a de facto cohabitation as a family. In the territories occupied by Russia, Russian anti-LGBT laws apply.
