San Diego combines Pacific beaches, a mild climate all year round and a relaxed urban culture close to the Mexican border. The queer scene is one of the largest in California and is concentrated on a few streets that are easy to explore on foot.
The scene
The centre is Hillcrest with University Avenue and Fifth Avenue, where Rich’s, Flicks, Gossip Grill and The Brass Rail are close together. East of there in North Park you will find the bear and leather bars Pecs and San Diego Eagle as well as the drag dinner show at Lips. The LGBT Community Center is also in Hillcrest.
When to go?
- July: San Diego Pride from 11 to 19 July 2026, with the parade through Hillcrest on 18 July
- August: FilmOut San Diego (20–23 August 2026) and Hillcrest CityFest

Practical tips
- Hillcrest is easy to explore on foot; for North Park and Point Loma a rideshare is worthwhile
- For Black’s Beach, bring sturdy shoes and water, as the descent is steep
- Many bars are 21 and over, so always carry ID
