Bologna

Bologna is the secret capital of queer Italy – the Cassero was founded here in 1982. The university city is left-leaning, young and open, and that’s exactly how the scene feels too.

The scene

Everything revolves around the Cassero, a cultural centre, bar and club in one: people dance here at weekends, and in summer on the roof garden. For the first drink, people meet at Il Barattolo near the Two Towers. On Saturdays you head to the Red Club in the east of the city, and if you want to cruise, go to Bar’t Club or the Cosmos sauna by the station. The scene is very mixed, politically aware and pleasantly unpretentious.

When to go?

  • June – Rivolta Pride: Bologna’s Pride starts in the Giardini Margherita and moves to Parco della Montagnola (2026: 13 June). (Check dates with the organiser)
  • Late October/early November – Gender Bender Festival: An international queer festival for dance and performance, from 29 October to 7 November in 2026.

Practical tips

  • For the Cassero (Arcigay card) as well as Red, Bar’t and the saunas (ANDDOS card) you need a membership card, around 10–15 euros and valid for one year – bring ID.
  • The Zona Roveri with the Red Club has no public transport at night: plan on a taxi home.
  • In July the summer series “L’Altra Sponda” at the Cassero, with mostly free parties and aperitivi, is well worth it.
