Kyiv is a city at war, and the German Foreign Office has a travel warning in place for Ukraine. Nevertheless, the queer scene lives on, with parties that start early, unmarked club doors and a Pride that in 2026 was bigger than it had been for years.
Safety & legal situation
- German Foreign Office: A travel warning applies to the whole of Ukraine (as of 10 October 2026). Since the end of August 2026 there have been increased Russian drone attacks on the Kyiv region, often with long air-raid alerts, including during the day.
- Curfew and alerts: A night-time curfew applies in Kyiv, from 1am to 5am since 10 September 2026. During air-raid alerts, clubs and bars often have to pause. Find out about nearby shelters in advance.
- Legal situation: Homosexuality has been legal since 1991, and there is protection against discrimination in employment law. However, there is still no registered partnership, and a bill is stuck in parliament. The community criticises a new draft civil code as a step backwards.
- Risk: The greatest danger comes from the war, not from the authorities. The police protect Pride events, but in 2025/26 far-right groups have repeatedly threatened and attacked queer venues and people.
- Practical: Club doors are often unmarked. Opening hours change at short notice, so check the venues’ Instagram or Telegram and register on the German crisis preparedness list “Elefand”.
Partying before curfew
Kyiv’s nightlife has shifted to the evening: people party roughly between 5pm and 11pm so that everyone is home before curfew. LIFT, behind a nameless door on the fourth floor, is the city’s largest gay club, and Portum in Podil has drag revues and a darkroom. For electronic music fans, Closer with its queer Vertuha parties and K41 are the most important addresses. Many guests say these evenings feel less like escape and more like solidarity.
When to go?
- June – KyivPride: The Equality March on 21 June 2026 had around 5,000 participants, making it the largest in years. The police protected it from far-right counter-demonstrators. (Check the 2027 date with the organiser)
- About every two months – Vertuha at Closer: A queer disco and house party from 5pm to 10:30pm with several hundred guests.
Our favourites
- LIFT – drag karaoke behind a secret door, a club that needs every guest
- Closer – Vertuha shows how to party in wartime

Practical tips
- Take air-raid alerts seriously: Install a warning app such as “Air Alert”, know where the nearest shelter is and go there immediately when the alert sounds, even from the club.
- Plan around the curfew: Since 10 September 2026 it applies from 1am to 5am and can be changed at short notice. Book your taxi in good time.
- Stay discreet: Society has become more open, but far-right groups continue to attack queer venues. Be reserved outside and don’t post club photos with a location tag.
