The Algarve means sun, rocky cliffs and, in summer, a surprisingly lively queer nightlife scene in Albufeira. Around Avenida Sá Carneiro, the Strip, the main bars are close together, with Portimão and Faro adding to the offer.

Albufeira and the Strip

The centre of the scene is Areias de São João in Albufeira: almost every evening starts at Connection Bar, and later people move on to The Forest with DJs and drag. If you prefer something more explicit, go to Dark by Nude next door. In the western Algarve, The Loft in Portimão is the meeting point at weekends. During the day, people meet at Praia Maria Luísa. It is busiest from June to September; in winter many venues have reduced hours.

When to go?

• June – Marcha do Orgulho LGBTQI+ do Algarve: The Pride march in Faro ends with a street party; in 2026 it took place on 20 June for the sixth time.
• July to September – high season: All the bars on the Strip are then open every evening and full of international guests.

Practical tips

• If you are after nightlife, it is best to stay in Albufeira near Avenida Sá Carneiro, so everything is within walking distance.
• Outside the season, opening hours often change at short notice, so check the venues’ Instagram or Facebook beforehand.
• For beach days with a naturist option, Praia Grande de Pêra west of Albufeira has its dune section.
