Montevideo

Montevideo is South America’s most laid-back capital, and that applies to its queer scene too. Legally, Uruguay is one of the most progressive countries on the continent, and you can feel it in the city’s relaxed atmosphere.

Centro and Parque Rodó

The scene is small but warm-hearted. The evening starts at Chains Pub in the Centro, the city’s most popular gay bar, and often ends at Il Tempo by Parque Rodó, where people dance until morning. During the day and early evening, the men’s saunas Toronto Sauna and Sauna Horus are popular meeting places. The partying mainly happens from Thursday to Saturday and, as everywhere on the Río de la Plata, very late.

When to go?

  • September – Marcha por la Diversidad: The big Pride march traditionally takes place on the last Friday in September and draws tens of thousands through the city centre; in 2026 that was 25 September (check dates with the organiser).
  • February – Carnival: Montevideo’s long carnival with murgas and candombe is colourful and open, including for queer visitors (check dates with the organiser).

Our favourites

  • Chains Pub – the classic for starting the night
  • Marcha por la Diversidad – Uruguay’s Pride as a true people’s festival

Practical tips

  • Before 1am there’s hardly anything going on in the clubs; a late dinner is part of the rhythm.
  • Chains has a minimum spend, so some cash in pesos is handy.
  • In summer part of the scene moves to the coast, and the city is quieter then.
