Indonesia is an archipelago of contrasts: from Hindu Bali to strictly Islamic Aceh. For queer travellers Bali is by far the most relaxed region, but nationwide the pressure on LGBTIQ people has grown in recent years.
Legal situation: Homosexual acts are not a criminal offence nationwide – except in the province of Aceh, where caning is imposed under Sharia law, including for non-Muslims. Since January 2026 a new penal code has been in force that threatens sex outside marriage with up to one year in prison (only on complaint by a spouse, parents or children). There is neither marriage nor registered partnership nor protection against discrimination; queer parties and gatherings are repeatedly prosecuted under the 2008 anti-pornography law.
