Costa Rica is the most open country in Central America, and its queer scene has two poles: the nightlife of San José and the beach at Manuel Antonio. Many people combine both into one trip of city, rainforest and Pacific.
From the capital to the Pacific
Almost all of the country’s gay bars are in San José, mainly south of the centre. La Avispa has been in business since 1979, Club Teatro focuses on big drag shows, and things are more explicit at Puchos Men’s Club. A good three and a half hours’ drive away, Manuel Antonio awaits with La Playita beach and Drunken Monkey, the only real gay disco on the coast. San José is busiest from Friday to Sunday.
When to go?

Practical tips
- At night in San José, take an Uber or taxi even for short distances, as the area around the bars can be unsafe after midnight.
- For the journey to Manuel Antonio, a shuttle or hire car is worthwhile. At La Playita, keep an eye on the tides.
