Floripa is Brazil’s island of beaches, and one of them is a legend of the queer world. At Praia Mole the party happens by day, and at night it carries on in the centre.

Between Praia Mole and Centro

During the day the scene meets at Praia Mole, where Bar do Deca has been serving drinks, drag and beach parties for decades. In the evening life shifts to the Centro: Jivago Social Club is the meeting place for the young crowd, and Conca Club draws people on Saturdays with three floors and a terrace. If you prefer something cruisier, 153 Men’s Club has a bar and darkroom under one roof. High season runs from December to Carnival; in winter the island is much quieter.

When to go?

• February – Carnival with Pop Gay: Floripa’s carnival is considered one of the queerest in Brazil; the Pop Gay parade with its drag and beauty contest celebrated its 30th edition in 2024 (check dates with the organiser).
• September – Parada LGBT+: The Pride parade usually takes place in September on Avenida Beira-Mar Continental (check dates with the organiser).

Practical tips

• For Praia Mole and Galheta you’ll need a hire car or the bus; at Galheta there’s neither water nor shade.
• In winter (June to August) many beach bars have shorter opening hours, but the clubs in the centre keep partying.
• Away from scene venues restraint is advisable: Brazil has liberal laws but a high rate of anti-queer violence.
