Japan is a safe and polite destination where queer life is discreet rather than demonstrative. With Shinjuku Ni-chōme, however, Tokyo has one of the densest gay districts in the world.
Legal situation: Homosexuality is legal, but there is no marriage equality yet. Several high courts have declared the marriage ban unconstitutional, and a landmark Supreme Court ruling is expected in 2027. Many municipalities and Tokyo prefecture issue partnership certificates, but they offer only limited rights. A comprehensive anti-discrimination law is lacking; the 2023 LGBT Understanding Act is mainly an appeal.
