Uruguay

Small Uruguay is one of the pioneers of LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America. A relaxed attitude shapes the country, from the capital Montevideo to the beaches on the Atlantic coast.

Legal situation: Uruguay has allowed same-sex marriage since 2013 and registered partnerships (Unión Concubinaria) since 2008; adoption is also open to same-sex couples. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited by law, and the comprehensive 2018 trans law regulates, among other things, changes to legal gender. There are no restrictive laws.
