Singapore is a safe, spotless city-state that is opening up on LGBTQ+ rights only in small steps. Abolishing the colonial-era sex ban in 2022 was a historic step, but equality is still a long way off.
Legal situation: At the end of November 2022 parliament repealed Section 377A of the penal code, which criminalised sex between men; consensual same-sex relationships have been legal since. At the same time the constitution was amended so that the definition of marriage as a union of a man and a woman rests with parliament alone and cannot be challenged in court. There is no marriage or registered partnership for same-sex couples, nor statutory protection against discrimination. LGBTQ+ content in the media remains restricted.
