Ho Chi Minh City, the old Saigon, is the queer heart of Vietnam. VietPride was born here in 2012, and amid the scooters, rooftops and street kitchens a young, open scene is buzzing.

District 1 & Đề Thám

The centre of the scene is Đề Thám Street in the backpacker district, where Frolic Bar with its drag parties and THI Bar with live music are just a few steps apart. On Hồ Tùng Mậu, Chinchin Bar invites you for cocktails and shows, while Elixir Lounge keeps going until morning. By day many men head to the pool at Azure in District 3. Vietnam is tolerant in everyday life, but the scene remains comparatively small and changes quickly.

When to go?

• Late summer/autumn – VietPride Ho Chi Minh City: The festival with parties, talks and culture usually takes place in the second half of the year (check dates with the organiser).
• Weekends – drag nights: On Saturdays Frolic Bar hosts its “Unzipped” drag parties.

Practical tips

• Many bars change their opening hours or concept quickly – check their social media channels before heading out.
• Grab motorbikes and cars are the fastest way to get around the city; don’t hold your phone loosely in traffic, as pickpockets on scooters are a well-known problem.
• Public displays of affection are generally uncommon in Vietnam – among straight couples too. A little restraint on the street is appropriate.
