Sofia

Sofia surprises with a small but remarkably lively weekend scene. During the week there’s hardly anything going on, but on Fridays and Saturdays the community parties until morning.

Around the centre

The most important venue is Club Asylum on Hristo Belchev Street, home of Gay Parties Sofia. VAULT, which usually parties at The Steps on Bratya Miladinovi, puts on big shows with drag and Pride parties. Club Barcode focuses on dance and Bulgarian pop-folk, while Club Essence has been the lesbian meeting place in the basement since 2004. Most venues only open at weekends from around 10pm.

When to go?

  • June – Sofia Pride: In 2026 Pride took place on 13 June, at the same time as a conservative “family march” – check the 2027 date with the organiser.
  • May – Eurovision party at VAULT: The scene watches the final together with drag and drinks (check dates with the organiser).

Our favourites

  • Club Asylum – the most reliable weekend party

Practical tips

  • Bulgaria does not recognise same-sex couples and in 2024 passed a law against “LGBT propaganda” in schools: discretion is advisable outside the venues.
  • Almost everything is closed during the week – it’s best to plan your trip for the weekend.
  • Parties and opening hours change often; check the clubs’ Instagram and Facebook beforehand.
