Manchester

Manchester is the unofficial gay capital of the North of England. Around Canal Street lies one of the largest and best-known gay villages in Europe – world-famous since the TV series “Queer as Folk” (1999) at the latest.

The Gay Village on Canal Street

The bars line the Rochdale Canal, many with terraces right on the water. With its rambling floors, Via is a classic, Thompsons Arms is a traditional pub with karaoke and drag, and REM Bar and G-A-Y keep the party going until late. Right next door, in Sackville Gardens, a memorial commemorates Alan Turing, who lived and worked in Manchester.

When to go?

  • Late August – Manchester Pride: a festival lasting several days over the August bank holiday weekend, with a parade and parties in the Village.
  • All year round: At weekends Canal Street becomes one big party strip.

Our favourites

  • Via – a multi-level classic on the canal.
  • Thompsons Arms – pub atmosphere with karaoke and drag.

Practical tips

  • The Village is central, just a few minutes’ walk from Piccadilly station.
  • Friday and Saturday nights get very busy – it’s more relaxed during the week.
