Punta del Este

Punta del Este is Uruguay’s summer beach resort on the Atlantic coast in the Maldonado department. The queer scene here plays out less in bars than on the beach and at a gay hotel west of the town.

The scene

The meeting point is the official nudist beach Playa Chihuahua on Portezuelo Bay, where gay men traditionally gather at the end by the dunes. Right behind it is the Undarius Hotel, which only takes gay men. You’ll need a car or taxi for both.

When to go

• December to February: peak season on Chihuahua beach
• December to March: high season at the Undarius Hotel
• Autumn and winter: beach very quiet, hotel pool closed at times

Practical tips

• A hire car makes getting between Chihuahua and the peninsula easier
• Nudity is only permitted on the designated stretch of beach
• Don’t go into the wooded areas behind the beach alone in the late afternoon
