Atlanta

Atlanta is the queer capital of the American South. The city has one of the largest Black LGBTQ+ communities in the USA and a scene that ranges from classic Midtown bars to young clubs on Edgewood Avenue.

Midtown and beyond

The centre is around Piedmont Park in Midtown: Blake’s on the Park has been the definitive classic since 1987. The reopened Atlanta Eagle and the hip-hop club Mixx Atlanta have settled in the Ansley Square shopping centre. If you prefer something quirkier, head to East Atlanta Village for Mary’s, while the young Lore on Edgewood Avenue draws people in with drag and cabaret. Many bars are open until 3am, and they get really busy from around 11pm.

When to go?

  • October – Atlanta Pride: Atlanta’s Pride traditionally takes place in October, with a festival in Piedmont Park and a parade through Midtown (10/11 October in 2026).
  • September – Atlanta Black Pride: On Labor Day weekend, tens of thousands travel in for one of the largest Black Pride events in the world (check the date with the organisers).

Our favourites

  • Blake’s on the Park – Drag with a park view, the perfect introduction to the scene.
  • Mary’s – One of the most charming neighbourhood bars in the South.

Practical tips

  • Atlanta is a car city: between Midtown, Ansley Square, Edgewood and East Atlanta, Uber or Lyft is the best option.
  • Most bars only serve alcohol to those aged 21 and over – bring ID, even if you look considerably older.
  • If you are travelling in October, book early: hotels in Midtown fill up quickly during Pride.
