In Philadelphia’s Gayborhood even the street signs are in rainbow colours. Around 12th and 13th Streets the bars are so close together that you can spend the whole evening on foot.
The Gayborhood
Between Locust, Spruce and 13th Streets beats the heart of the scene: Woody’s has been the anchor for more than 40 years, people sing around the piano at Tavern on Camac, and at Voyeur Nightclub the dancing often goes on well past 2am. The leather and bear scene meets at the Bike Stop, and if you prefer something more elegant, head to Stir Lounge on Rittenhouse Square. Good news came from Queen Village in 2026: with Val’s Lesbian Bar, the city has a lesbian bar again. The former Tabu also now trades under new management as 254 Philadelphia.
When to go?
- June – Philly Pride: In 2026 the festival took place on 7 June on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and there’s a programme in the Gayborhood throughout Pride week.
- October – OutFest: The traditional street festival for Coming Out Day in the Gayborhood (check dates with the organiser).
Our favourites
- Tavern on Camac – piano bar evenings of a kind you hardly find any more.
- Woody’s – the unmissable classic.

Practical tips
- Most bars are within a five-minute walk of each other – perfect for a bar crawl.
- At Voyeur non-members pay admission, but the dancing there often goes on longer than in the bars.
- Bob & Barbara’s on South Street isn’t a gay bar, but its Thursday drag show is legendary.
