Wilton Manors is Florida’s gay small-town miracle, a place where the rainbow flag flies at almost every bar on Wilton Drive. Located just north of Fort Lauderdale, it combines relaxed beach life with one of the densest bar scenes in the US.
Wilton Drive
Almost everything happens on Wilton Drive, where Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar, Hunters Nightclub, The Pub on the Drive, Rosie’s and The Eagle are just a few doors apart. Here you can wander on foot from bar to bar from happy hour to closing time. A little further away in Fort Lauderdale are the leather bar Ramrod and the party club LeBoy. The crowd is more mixed and older than in Miami, and the atmosphere is friendly and easy-going.
When to go?
- June, Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors: A parade and street festival on Wilton Drive with parties in all the bars (check dates with the organiser).
- November to April, high season: When it’s winter up north, the snowbirds arrive, and then the bars are busy even during the week and accommodation is in demand.
Our favourites
- Hunters: line dancing on Wednesdays.
- Georgie’s Alibi: the perfect starting point for any evening on the Drive.

Practical tips
- Wilton Drive is walkable; for Ramrod, LeBoy or the beach in Fort Lauderdale, a rideshare is worthwhile.
- Many bars don’t close until 3am at weekends. Bring ID, as the minimum drinking age is 21.
- In recent years Florida has passed several restrictive laws, for example on drag performances in front of minors; in Wilton Manors itself, little of this is noticeable in everyday life.
Beach and daytime
By day the scene meets on Fort Lauderdale beach. The well-known gay section is at Sebastian Street, not far from Las Olas Boulevard. After that people head back to their resort pool, and in the evening to dinner on Wilton Drive, where many restaurants have terraces.
Laws and safety
Same-sex couples have been able to marry in Florida since 2015. In recent years, however, the state has passed several laws aimed mainly at trans people. In Wilton Manors itself you notice little of this in everyday life, as the town is very open. At night, take a taxi for longer distances, since pavements and lighting off the main roads are often poor.
Getting there and around
Fort Lauderdale airport is only about 20 minutes by car from Wilton Manors. Many people also fly into Miami and take the Brightline train to Fort Lauderdale. Locally, taxis and ride apps are the easiest option, as public transport exists but runs infrequently. On Wilton Drive itself everything is within walking distance.
