Montreal’s Village is one of the largest gay neighbourhoods in North America – and has French savoir-vivre in its blood. Along Rue Sainte-Catherine Est, drag stages, clubs and terraces that stay open until 3am line up one after another.
Le Village
The centre is Rue Sainte-Catherine Est between the Beaudry and Papineau metro stations. Here you’ll find Cabaret Mado for drag with Québécois wit, Club Unity with its roof terrace, Bar Le Cocktail for karaoke and shows, and Le Stud for bears and leather fans. Bar Renard is good for pre-drinks, while the lesbian scene likes to head to Notre-Dame-des-Quilles in La Petite-Patrie. According to current reviews, the former mega-complex Sky seems considerably quieter at the moment.
When to go?
- July/August – Fierté Montréal: Ten days of Pride with parties, concerts and the big parade on Boulevard René-Lévesque; from 31 July to 9 August in 2026.
- Summer – pedestrian zone in the Village: In the warm months Rue Sainte-Catherine Est becomes car-free and turns into one long strip of terraces (check dates with the organiser).
Our favourites
- Cabaret Mado – drag with Québécois charm, almost every night
- Le Stud – the bear and leather bar with two terraces since 1995

Practical tips
- Most bars close at 3am; the metro runs until about 1am, a little longer at weekends.
- A few words of French go down well – shows at Cabaret Mado are mostly in French.
- Winter is very cold; the terraces are closed then and some clubs only open at weekends.
