Few cities have shaped gay life as much as Berlin. There’s no single gay neighbourhood here, but several scenes, each with its own character: the classic bar strip in Schöneberg, the queer pub and party scene in Kreuzberg and Neukölln, and a club culture that sets standards worldwide. Add to that a calendar that barely pauses, from the winter market to CSD.
The neighbourhoods at a glance
Schöneberg – the rainbow neighbourhood. The traditional centre of the scene lies around Nollendorfplatz, Motzstraße and Fuggerstraße. The area was already a meeting place in the 1920s; the writer Christopher Isherwood lived on Nollendorfstraße. Today bars for every taste line the streets, from cosy pubs to leather haunts. At Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station, a memorial plaque in the shape of a pink triangle commemorates the homosexuals persecuted under National Socialism. Ideal for your first evening in the city.
Kreuzberg and Neukölln – queer, mixed, alternative. Around Kottbusser Tor and on towards Neukölln the scene is younger, more diverse and less focused on gay men. Lesbians, trans and non-binary people, gay men and friends meet here in neighbourhood pubs and at parties that look more back courtyard than high gloss.
Friedrichshain – endless club nights. Housed in a former power station, Berghain is one of the best-known clubs in the world. Weekends in Berlin like to start on Saturday evening and end at some point on Monday.
When to go?
- July: First the Lesbian and Gay City Festival around Nollendorfplatz, then CSD with its parade through the city centre – the peak season of the year.
- September: Folsom Europe turns Schöneberg into Europe’s largest fetish gathering.
- November and December: LGBTIQ Winterdays and Christmas Avenue, the queer winter market under the elevated railway tracks at Nollendorfplatz.
- All year round: Parties, drag nights and bingo nights – current dates are listed below.
Our favourites
- For the first drink: Prinzknecht in Schöneberg – a big bar counter, beer benches outside, right in the heart of the neighbourhood.
- For an evening without a dress code: Möbel Olfe at Kotti, Kreuzberg’s cult queer pub.
- For the daytime: the Schwules Museum – one of the first museums in the world dedicated to queer history – and the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted under National Socialism in the Tiergarten.

Practical tips
- Most U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines run through the night on Friday and Saturday nights – handy for bar-hopping between neighbourhoods.
- Many bars and clubs only take cash. A few notes in your pocket will save you trouble at the bar.
- At club doors the usual rule is: small groups, appear sober, and photography inside is often prohibited.
